Southern Miss Softball to Host Nationally-Ranked LSU on Tuesday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss softball team returns to action with a midweek game against No. 7 LSU on Tuesday evening at the Softball Complex in Hattiesburg, Miss. The game is slated for 6 p.m.
This game will be a BLACKOUT game with the first 100 fans in attendance receiving a BLACKOUT t-shirt.
Live stats and in-game tweets (@SouthernMissSB) will be available throughout the game. In addition, the game will be streamed online via C-USA TV (All Access). Josh West will also be in attendance with play-by-play on 1400 AM broadcasting to the local Hattiesburg area.
The Golden Eagles enter the week 9-6 overall, while the Tigers are 12-3 on the season.
Southern Miss is coming off a three-game sweep of Jacksonville State (9-4) this past weekend while LSU went 3-2 in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with losses to UCLA and Utah.
Senior Bailey Stokes led the team in batting avg. on the weekend with a .750 having two runs on three hits and five RBI accounted for two of the four extra bases of the weekend. Stokes also had a solo home run during the Sunday game insuring the win for the Golden Eagles.
Lauren Holifield and Jade Lewis both recorded a .400 batting avg. on 10 at-bats. Holifield who had one run on four hits and one RBI accounted for four total bases on the weekend. Lewis, who also pitched in the third game, started as at designated player and also had one run on four hits and accounted for four total bases to add to the team's total of 27.
In the circle for the Golden Eagles, a quartet of pitchers completed the sweep. Saturday, Jillian Johnson and Kim Crowson both pitched complete games and moved to 3-0 and 4-3 on the season, respectively. Johnson allowed only one run on five hits and had two strikeouts in game one of the series. Crowson allowed three runs on nine hits and had three strikeouts in game two. On Sunday, Peyton Carter, the transfer sophomore from Arkansas, started her first game on the season. Carter pitched 2 1/3 innings with four runs on seven hits with a strikeout. Jade Lewis came in the middle of the third inning for Carter and completed the third game with no runs on two hits and two strikeouts.
LSU holds a 21-5 advantage in the all-time series with Southern Miss, including a 15-4 record in Baton Rouge and 5-1 in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles won four of the first six meetings between the two teams, but the Tigers have gotten the better of the Black and Gold recently.
The two teams have not met in Hattiesburg since the home-and-home series in 2011. Each team won on their respective fields with the Golden Eagles posting a 5-0 victory over the No. 25 Tigers on March 16, 2011. Current LSU assistant coach Howard Dobson was the head coach of Southern Miss in the game.
