
Southern Miss Softball Claims Doubleheader Victory over the Gamecocks

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - Southern Miss softball moves to 8-6 on the season after capturing two wins on the day. The Golden Eagles rallied back to win the second game from a 2-0 deficit to win 4-3 after a four-run inning.
The Golden Eagles will conclude the three-game series tomorrow, Sunday, at 1:00 p.m. Josh West with 1400 AM will be in attendance, streaming for the local Hattiesburg area. Live stats and twitter updates (@SouthernMissSB) will be available as well.

In the first inning, the Golden Eagles had two runs on three hits to start the game. Chase Nelson had the first hit of the day, a single to right. Jade Lewis followed up with a single to the right side with two outs. Caitlyn Aldous then sealed the deal with a single to center field when the Gamecocks committed a throwing error allowing Nelson and Lewis to score.
The Gamecocks were held scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when Anna Chisolm hit a solo homerun to cut the lead, 2-1. The defense stepped up and shut Jacksonville State down to hold them to that lone run.
In the circle, Jillian Johnson had a stellar showing allowing one run on five hits in 7.0 innings of work. Johnson (3-0) had two strikeouts and walked only three batters on the day.

Jacksonville State got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Emily Woodruff singled to third base, then stole second with one out to set up the run. Then a walk and a single to the left side loaded the bases. Stephanie Lewis ground out to second allowing Woodruff to come home. The inning ended with just the one run.
The game stayed stagnate until Southern Miss took the lead in the top of the sixth with a huge four run inning. Nelson doubled down the left line for the first hit of the inning. The next at bat, Jade Lewis was walked, Ciarra Cherry came in to run for Lewis. Samantha Reynolds was walked to load the bases with no outs. Bailey Stokes doubled down the left line and then advanced to third on an error by the Gamecocks, the double by Stokes brought in Nelson, Cherry, and Reynolds, still one out. Arielle Pollock singled to left field to bring in Stokes for the fourth run of the inning. At the conclusion of the half inning, Southern Miss led 4-2.
The Gamecocks tried to rally back in the bottom of the sixth with a single run off two double hits. The one run in the inning wasn't enough for Jacksonville State.
In the circle, Kim Crowson (4-2) pitched a complete game and only allowed three runs on nine hits. Crowson only walked two batter and struck three out.
