Track and Field Have Solid Showing at Vulcan Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Southern Miss men's and women's indoor track and field teams had a solid showing at the Vulcan Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.
Southern Miss had two event winners in Courtney Filliben and Donald Daley. Filliben ran a time of 2:14.21 in the 800m. Daley had a mark of 18.30m in the weight throw.
"We had another good day of competition with Courtney Filliben and Donald Daley winning in their respective events," said head coach Jon Stuart.
Golden Eagles who notched a top five finish started with returner Modesty Lorick who placed second in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.66. Regen McGee ran 5:04.88 in the one mile placing her third, teammate Savannah McMillon finished sixth with a time of 5:07.20. Danisha Jones placed fifth in the weight throw with a 17.64m toss. Rounding out the women's top five placing was Jamari Drake who jumped a 1.64m mark placing her third in the high jump.
Both of the 4x400 relay teams had strong outings. The women, placed third with a time of 3:51.18 and the men placed fourth with a time of 3:17.72.
The men's top five placings started in the one mile with Patton Little running to a second place finish with a time of 4:23.37. Caleb Parker ran a time of 8.21 to give him third place in the 60m hurdles. Eric Washington finished with a fourth place in the long jump with a 7.04m mark. Donald Daley ended fifth in the shot put with a 15.37m mark.
Other Golden Eagles in the top ten include newcomer Nina Nkem who had a sixth place finish in the 400m dash with a time of 57.62. Alexis Chiles with a seventh place in the shot put with a 14.28m mark, also in the shot put was teammate Brashe' Wood tossing a 13.22 for a ninth place finish. Curtis Walker and Lorenzen Burton were both in the 400m placing seventh and ninth respectively, with times of 48.66 and 48.92. Alexander Richemond placed eighth in the 200m with a time of 21.89. Devonta Brassell finished seventh in the triple jump with a 14.56m mark.
"The kids are a little tired and sore after two days of running, jumping, and throwing but our confidence is up after this meet," said Stuart. "The jitters are gone and we will just continue the process of getting better."
The Golden Eagles return back to action next weekend, Jan. 20, at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tenn.
