HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Lady Eagle basketball team (11-5, 3-1) will face the Charlotte 49ers (12-4, 4-1) on Saturday afternoon on Mascot Day where Mascot Seymour and several of his Mascot Buddies will be in attendance. The mascots will also be playing in a Halftime Scrimmage against a girls youth basketball team.
"Charlotte is considered the top team in the league right now," said head coach Joye Lee-McNelis. "They can shoot the cover off the basketball. They're the best shooting team in our conference. They have a lot of weapons and I think that's what makes it difficult to guard them, everybody can score. They creates a challenge because of our lack of size."
Charlotte and the Lady Eagles first met in the 1985-86 season and have faced each other 24 times since. Charlotte has won the past two meetings and the Lady Eagles have not been Charlotte at Reed Green Coliseum since the 2001-02 season.
Charlotte leads C-USA in scoring offense (76.6 points per game), field goal percentage (.461), assist (19.0 per game), assists to turnover ratio (1.4) and is second in 3-point field goals made (7.8 per game). Laia Raventos 6.8 assists per game leads the conference and Ciara Gregory's 4.2 3-point field goals per game lead the conference. Charlotte also boasts three players that average double-digit scoring figures.
