HATTIESBURG, Miss -- The Southern Miss Women's Basketball team took part in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's inaugural Day of Service.
The team, in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity, dug out old electrical poles, built garden boxes and helped with other landscaping needs at the worksite in Petal.
"We're already workers and so we enjoy the work part, especially when it's outside the gym," said Junior guard Megan Brown. "To know that it's affecting and helping people, that we may never see, means the world. There are people that helped me get to where I am and everyone needs a little help."
The WBCA is encouraging all programs to engage in some act of service -- small or large -- within the team's community to raise awareness for the program, the coaching profession, and the WBCA.
"It's all about giving," said Assistant Coach Pauline Love. "It's a rush to see other people happy and when we come back we can say, `I helped build that.'"
About Habitat for Humanity:
Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The Christian housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in nearly 1,400 communities throughout the U.S. and in nearly 70 countries.
Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
