HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
Former Southern Miss track standout Tori Bowie captured third place in the 100 meter final at the USA Track and Field Olympic Trials Sunday night in Eugene, Ore., earning a spot in next month’s Rio Summer Olympic Games.
After posting the best time in the semifinals of 10.74, Bowie finished third in the finals at 10.779 at Hayward Field, behind winner English Gardner at 10.74 and Tianna Bartoletta at 10.776. Her finish, though, enabled her to claim a spot on the USA Team for the Olympics.
“I felt like in the final I didn’t really run my race,” said Bowie. “It was more of me seeing these ladies out in front of me. I was just popping up instead of trying to execute, so I know what I did wrong today, and that’s one of the reasons I’m content. We get another try at Rio.”
Bowie will get another chance to add to her number of Olympic events as she also goes after a 200 meter title, which will be held July 7-8.
Still, the former Golden Eagle is excited to be a member of the 2016 USA Olympic Team.
“I’m completely thankful I’m on the Olympic team” said Bowie. “I’ve been waiting four years for this moment. Since 2012, I’ve been saying that whatever happened today, I’m going to be thankful. I have another race to attend to this week, running the 200, and I’m extremely excited about it.”
