DENTON, Texas -- The Southern Miss softball team opens play in the 2016 Conference USA Championships on Wednesday evening at Lovelace Stadium in Denton, Texas on the campus of North Texas. The Golden Eagles, who earned a No. 3 seed in the tournament, will face the winner of No. 6 UTEP and No. 7 FIU at 7:30 p.m.
Live stats and in-game tweets (@SouthernMissSB) will be available throughout the tournament. In addition, there will be a live video stream available via the C-USA Digital Network for each game leading up to the championship. The C-USA Championship game will be aired on the CBS Sports Network at noon on Saturday, May 14.
With a sweep over UTEP and a UAB loss to North Texas, Southern Miss tied the Blazers for first place in the West Division. Since UAB won the head-to-head series between the two schools, Southern Miss will be the No. 3 seed in the tournament.
The Golden Eagles concluded the regular season with a 28-26 overall record, marking the most wins in a season since notching 29 victories in 2006 and 2005. Southern Miss finished C-USA play 14-10 overall, registering the most conference wins in a season since 2004 -- the last time the Golden Eagles won the Conference USA regular season.
The Southern Miss sweep over UTEP to end the regular season was the second three-game Conference USA sweep for the Golden Eagles this season and the first time since 2004 the Black and Gold recorded multiple C-USA sweeps in a season.
The Golden Eagles join No. 1 Florida Atlantic, No. 2 UAB, No. 4 Louisiana Tech, No. 5, Marshall, No. 6 UTEP, No. 7 FIU, and No. 8 UTSA in the 2016 tournament. Wednesday's action is single elimination with double elimination beginning on Thursday.
The tournament begins with Marshall and UTSA at noon on Wednesday with UTEP and FIU squaring off at 2:30 p.m. The winner of the Thundering Herd and Roadrunners plays at 5 p.m. against Louisiana Tech, while the Miners and Panthers' winner will play the Golden Eagles at 7:30 p.m.
