HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Former Southern Miss soccer standout Sarah McFadden has been called up to the Northern Ireland squad for their upcoming European Championship Qualifiers. McFadden, who joined the club from Sunderland at the start of the year, teams up with her nation as they prepare to take on the Czech Republic and Italy in EURO 2017 qualifiers.
Two appearances for McFadden will edge her ever closer to 50 international caps, a milestone she will be hoping to reach this year. After hosting the Czechs on April 8, the Northern Irish squad will jet off to Italy to ahead of their game on Tuesday, April 12.
Speaking to the official website after her call-up, McFadden said: "I'm really happy to be back involved. It's been over two years since I last played a game for Northern Ireland so I've missed it. Hopefully, with the squad we have for these games we pick up some points from much higher ranked opposition."
McFadden played for the Golden Eagles from 2005-08. She was a two-time All-Conference USA selection -- First Team in 2007 and Second Team in 2008. She was named to the C-USA All-Freshman team in 2005. In addition, McFadden was a member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll (2008).
She led the team in goals all four years at Southern Miss. In addition, McFadden led the team in points as a sophomore, junior, and senior, while leading the team in assists as a sophomore.
When she graduated, McFadden held the school record for games played. She finished her career ranked in the Southern Miss top 5 in games started, points, goals, shots, and shots on goal.
