Softball Edged on Road by Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The Southern Miss softball team battled SEC foe Mississippi State hard, but fell 4-0 on the road at Nusz Park in Starkville, Miss. The score remained tied at 0-0 until the Bulldogs scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead. The home team added three insurance runs in the sixth inning to secure the win.
Offensively, Southern Miss recorded six hits on the night. The Golden Eagles were led by Lauren Holifield and Samantha Robles who each had a pair of hits. Katie Cleary and Morgan McKeever each added additional hits in the game.
In the circle, the Black and Gold used a pair of pitchers on the night. Robles earned the start and was charged with the loss. The sophomore tossed 5.0 innings surrendering four runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout. She allowed just one run through the first five innings, but was charged with three runs in the sixth. Jillian Johnson entered the game in relief. She allowed a pair of hits in a scoreless inning of work.
Mississippi State broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Bulldogs' Katie Anne Bailey homered to left field to put the home team on the scoreboard.
The score remained 1-0 until the sixth inning. In the bottom of the frame, Mississippi State used a walk, a bunt single and an error to put runners on the corners. The trail runner stole second to give the home team a pair of runners in scoring position. The Bulldogs used a single up the middle to plate the runners. On the play, the batter advanced to second on the throw to the plate. After a pitching change, the Golden Eagles used a line out to third for the first out. The Bulldogs doubled to score the third run of the inning. The second out of the inning was recorded as interference was called on Mississippi State. A groundout ended the inning, but saw Southern Miss down 4-0.
The Golden Eagles started the seventh inning with a single up the middle by McKeever, but a double play erased the runner. The Bulldogs recorded a strikeout to end the game and thwart any comeback attempts.
Southern Miss will have the weekend off before returning to action on Wednesday, April 27 as the Golden Eagles play host to ULM. Live stats, live audio, live video, and in-game tweets (@SouthernMissSB) will be available throughout the game.
