
Offense Lifts Softball to Win Over Southeastern La.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss softball team tallied 14 hits, including four extra-base hits as the Golden Eagles posted an 8-2 victory over Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday night at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
Eight different players recorded hits on the night with five players notching multiple hits. Katie Cleary led the team with three hits, while Tori Dew, Sarah Evans, Bailey Stokes, and Kaelyn Christofferson each added two hits apiece. Dew belted her first home run in a Golden Eagle uniform, while Cleary, Evans and Samantha Robles each doubled in the game. Morgan McKeever and Robles had two RBI apiece, while Evans and Christofferson each scored a pair of runs.
Robles went the distance in the circle. The redshirt sophomore scattered six hits in 7.0 innings of work, allowing a pair of runs. Robles did not walk a batter and struck out five.

Southern Miss broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Christofferson legged out an infield single to short. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Samantha Reynolds. McKeever singled through the right side of the infield, scoring Christofferson from second.
The Golden Eagles added some insurance runs in the third. Cleary led off the inning with a double to left field. Evans plated Cleary with a one-out RBI double to left center field. Following a pitching change, Stokes singled to left field, leaving runners at the corners. With two outs, Christofferson singled up the middle, scoring Evans and extending the advantage to 3-0.
Southern Miss put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth inning. Stokes led off the inning with a single and Arielle Pollock entered to pinch run at first base. Robles doubled down the left field line, scoring A. Pollock from first base. The flex Rachel Johnson entered to run at second base for Robles. Christofferson walked to give the Golden Eagles a pair of base runners. Reynolds dropped down a bunt to move the runners. On the play, Reynolds reached safely on a throwing error, allowing R. Johnson to score and Christofferson to reach third base. Reynolds stole second base to move into scoring position. McKeever flew out to left field. On the play, Christofferson scored but Reynolds was thrown out trying to advance to third. Dew continued the inning with a home run off of the scoreboard in left center field to close out the scoring.
Southeastern Louisiana chipped into the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, SLU's Kinsey Nichols doubled to center field. Amber Sather followed with a two-run homer to left field. Robles stopped any potential rally with back-to-back strikeouts to close out the inning.
The Golden Eagles added a final run in the bottom of the sixth. Evans led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. She moved to third base on a ground out and came around to score on a RBI groundout, making the score 8-2.
