Report: Southern Miss football moved practice to the game field at The Rock with the threat of impending weather. The Golden Eagles practiced for three hours in full pads with on-and-off rain as the Black and Gold prepared for the first scrimmage of the spring season, which is scheduled for Saturday morning. The team worked on various individual and team drills, including red zone offense and defense.
Head Coach Jay Hopson
On practice's intensity...
"I thought today was a good day, but there are still a lot of corrections to be made. I think we practiced hard. We have practiced hard all week. Now we just have to compile that and come out for a big scrimmage on Saturday."
On preseason corrections...
"There are a lot of corrections to be made, but that is just a part of spring football. We are just trying to get better every day and work all the way up to the season."
Was the team more vocal today?
"No question. As far as effort and intensity today, it was a really good practice. They made theirs calls and that's what we need to continue to do."
Wide Receiver Coach John Wozniak
On the new wide receivers learning the system...
"They have come in and tried to learn the best that they can. We have to learn how to play fast, but that comes with learning new assignments. They are all good kids that mean well. They are big physical guys. They are going to be just fine."
Wide Receiver Isaiah Jones
On the chemistry between newcomers and returners...
"We all got pretty close as soon as we came in. The guys that have been here really helped out the junior college guys and the younger guys with trying to adjust. Coach Woz made it feel like home so it wasn't hard to catch on. Everyone is really friendly so we get along well."
