Report: Southern Miss went through its third day of spring football drills Tuesday afternoon at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility. The Golden Eagles had their first day in full pads under first-year coach Jay Hopson. The squad continues to put in the basics and the Golden Eagle top man has been happy with the progress over the first three day of practices.
Head Coach Jay Hopson
On the first day in full pads...
"We had some decent intensity at times. I thought we were up and down today. I thought we started off pretty intense and had some fun with a little Oklahoma type drills to get it going. I was pleased with that. I thought through our team and skill we were a little bit too up and down. We have to get better at that."
Working with DBs and techniques...
"That's what spring's about. I try to bounce around a few positions as many as I can get to. I'm kind of like a hired gun, if the assistant coaches tell me they need me for 10 or 15 minutes, I jump in. At the end of the day, it's good to get them fundamentally right early. That's what football is all about. We know we still have a lot of work to do."
On where you want to be after third practice...
"In some regards, I'm really pleased where we are, and in some regards, we still have a ways to go. I think we have pretty good retention and we're going at a pretty fast rate which is good football-wise. Some of the little things we have to get better at."
Competition at the Defensive backs...
"It is a good competition, just an every day in and day out, competitive work. That group is pretty competitive by nature. You usually don't have to tell them twice to come out and work hard. They like working. We've got some fun competition in that group."
Assistant Coach/Secondary Dave Disch
"Everything starts with your fundamentals, your techniques. That's what spring is all about. Learning techniques and finding where you're going to put guys who can play. That's the most important thing is fundamentals and playing with great energy. We are getting better with that every day. That's the goal of spring is to learn the techniques that go along with the defense."
"The depth chart is wide open. Right now I'm pleased with the efforts is good."
Senior Defensive Lineman Dylan Bradley
On the First Day of Full Pads...
"It felt good to be back in full pads, hitting each other, and getting back to the feel of playing football. Being out of pads for a while, you kind of lose the feel, but being able to be in pads today, getting to wrap up, and the feel of it. It is a different feel when you are in pads. You see who really wants to be out on the field."
