Report: Southern Miss football began spring practice under first-year head coach Jay Hopson. The team worked out in shorts and helmets for three hours on a beautiful spring day. The Golden Eagles began implementing Hopson's system with individual position groups and several team sessions.

On the first spring practice...
"This was a normal first day of spring practice. Defensively, I thought we played with good effort. I thought we swarmed the ball pretty well. Offensively, we had deceit execution at times and there weren't many balls on the ground. That's always a good thing on the first day."
On the new staff...
"This is a learning stage of getting everybody on the same page. I thought it was pretty good today."
Getting into the new installations / playbook...
"It's really what's it all about right now, getting all that in. You've got to crawl before you walk. We putting in the basics right now. The guys have had good retention and they are getting it."
On competing for championships...
"We want to compete for championships every year. It's always our goal. We know we have to go out there and do it. It's football and every year is a different journey and a different year. We know we have to work hard to accomplish our goals."
On the senior leadership...
"We've got some good senior leadership. Our guys are working hard. It's the first day of practice and we have a lot of improvement to do, but we worked pretty hard today."
