SOUTHERN MISS FOOTBALL
vs Charlotte NOTES
November 5, 2016
Southern Miss Captains: 22 -- Darian Yancey, 25 -- Ito Smith, 85 -- Ja'Boree Poole
Coin Flip: Southern Miss won the coin toss and elected to receive. Southern Miss will defend the south end zone.
Team Notes:
It was just the second all-time meeting between the schools after Southern Miss won 44-10 the previous year on Charlotte's homecoming.
The Golden Eagles remain one win away from bowl eligibility, which would be the second consecutive and 20th of the last 23 years it did so.
Offensive Notes:
Chase Whitehead's 78 yard touchdown in the first quarter was the second of his career (previous against UTSA).
Nick Mullens has thrown for 200 yards or more in 34 games while at Southern Miss. He also drew within one passing TD of tying Austin Davis' career school record (83).
Ito Smith moved into No. 5 all-time at Southern Miss for all-purpose yards with 4,007. He surpassed Derrick Nix (1998-00, 02), who tallied 4,005.
Smith has scored a touchdown in 14 straight games and entered the game No. 13 nationally in rushing with 915 yards. He now stands at 984 on the year.
Southern Miss' 90-yard scoring drive is the longest since Stagger's 93 yard touchdown against Rice.
Korey Robertson ended with game-highs of 8 catches and 80 yards. The former is a career-high while the latter is one off (had 6 catches for 81 yards in 2015 opener versus Mississippi State).
Parker Adamson's rushing TD in the fourth quarter was the first of his career. It also capped a 19 play drive. The longest scoring drive of the season.
Adamson doubled his season's offensive input with 13 completions on 27 attempts for 155 yards. He entered the day 6-for-12.
Defensive Notes:
The Golden Eagle held Hasaan Klugh without a completion until the second quarter.
Xavier Thigpen registered two sacks, a first for Southern Miss since Dylan Bradley had 3 ½ vs. Rice.
D'Nerius Antoine's 12 tackles are a new career-high.
Draper Riley was next with six tackles.
No Charlotte receiver had more than two catches.
Special Team Notes:
Tyler Sarrazin had two punts downed inside the 2 yard-line.
Parker Shaunfield is now perfect on 36 PAT attempts this season after entering the day No. 14 nationally among kickers to be 100 percent on the season.
