HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Members of the 2016 Southern Miss softball team will be presented their Conference USA West Division Championship rings at Saturday afternoon's football game versus Charlotte.
The Golden Eagles, which were projected to finish last in the West Division, instead captured a 30-28 record in head coach Wendy Hogue's second season. It was the first winning season for the program since 2004, and marked the fifth time in school history it had 30 or more wins in a season.
Lauren Holifield was named the 2016 C-USA Newcomer of the Year, only the second Golden Eagle to win the award in program history (Megan Hill - 2007). Holifield also garnered 2016 Conference USA Softball All-Tournament Team honors and notched Second Team All-Conference accolades. Samantha Robles also earned Second Team All-Conference honors.
The Golden Eagles concluded postseason play after falling to UAB in the Conference USA tournament, hosted by North Texas.
Southern Miss begins the 2017 campaign when they take on McNeese State University in Lake Charles, LA on Feb. 9. The Golden Eagles host the Black & Gold Invitational at the Softball Complex to open up the 2017 home campaign on Feb. 17-19.
