HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss football team will host Marshall on Saturday at 6 p.m. for its annual HOMECOMING game. As that date approaches, we take a look back on the 10 most memorable HOMECOMING games in Golden Eagle history.
Oct. 22, 2011 -- The Golden Eagles and Mustangs were both within arms' reach of the national rankings. SMU earlier in the year won at No. 20 TCU in overtime, and Southern Miss' only blemish was a six-point loss in the second week at Marshall. The Southern Miss defense turned in its best performance in three years, holding the high-powered SMU offense to 330 yards and 14 first downs and forced two late turnovers to seal the win in front of 32,695 fans. The Mustangs were held to a 50 percent passing completion rate, with seven of those 16 going into the hands of current Dallas Cowboy Cole Beasley.
Austin Davis was 27-of-37 for 266 yards in his final HOMECOMING as a player, but Markese Wheaton turned in arguably the most pivotal performance, however. He intercepted one pass in the endzone for a touchback before returning his second for a 41-yard touchdown that essentially sealed the game with seven minutes to play.
