HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss football team will host Marshall on Saturday at 6 p.m. for its annual HOMECOMING game. As that date approaches, we take a look back on the 10 most memorable HOMECOMING games in Golden Eagle history.
Nov. 1, 2003 -- Southern Miss turned in another strong performance in a 48-3 HOMECOMING victory over UL Lafayette, amassing 264 yards rushing and 286 yards through the air and scoring six touchdowns. Quarterback Dustin Almond threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, finishing with 187 yards on 11-of-15 attempts. Wide receiver Marvin Young caught four of those passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns, while tailback Anthony Harris tallied a career high 130 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.
The game marked Southern Miss' third of nine straight HOMECOMING wins, in which it also outscored its opponents an average of 45-15. The 2003 squad won its final six regular-season games, including a 40-28 beating of No. 9 TCU on a Thursday night in The Rock. It was one of the four teams that Jeff Bower coached to nine wins.
