HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss football team will host Marshall on Saturday at 6 p.m. for its annual HOMECOMING game. As that date approaches, we take a look back on the 10 most memorable HOMECOMING games in Golden Eagle history.
Nov. 13, 1936 -- It was just the fifth HOMECOMING in Southern Miss' history, and this particular win did wonders for the program's development. The squad moved to 6-1-1 on the year after the 44-14 blowout victory against SW Louisiana Institute (now UL Lafayette), tying the most wins in school history to that point (first season in 1912; no teams from 1917-18 due to World War I). It actually marked back-to-back years that the team set a new school record for wins when Southern Miss came back two weeks later to defeat Texas A&M-Commerce 13-6 in the finale.
Head coach Pooley Hubert left Hattiesburg after the 1936 campaign, taking a job at VMI. He is known throughout the college football world for leading Alabama to the 1925 Rose Bowl title, often called the "Game that Changed the South."
