HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss football team will host Marshall on Saturday at 6 p.m. for its annual HOMECOMING game. As that date approaches, we take a look back on the 10 most memorable HOMECOMING games in Golden Eagle history.
Oct. 14, 2006 -- It was the sixth of nine consecutive HOMECOMING wins for the Golden Eagles, this one 31-27, and came against Heisman Trophy candidate and eventual veteran NFL quarterback Kevin Kolb. Southern Miss went up 14-7 with 4:14 left in the first half on Jeremy Young's 22-yard touchdown pass to Josh Barnes. Young would account for two more scores in the fourth quarter, with each extending the Golden Eagle lead to 10 points. The first was a one-yard run at the 10:47 mark and the second a 16-yard connection to Shawn Nelson with 3:46 left that essentially iced the game.
An outstanding crowd of 32,317 saw the win over the Cougars. Southern Miss ultimately won its final four conference games to reach the C-USA Championship game. The Golden Eagles closed out Jeff Bower's penultimate season with a 28-7 win over Ohio in the GMAC Bowl.
