HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss men's tennis dropped a close match 4-3 to Lamar, after the Cardinals rallied to win four of the six singles Sunday at the USM Tennis Courts.
Southern Miss falls to 3-2 while Lamar improved to 2-2.
"The team competed much better today to win the doubles point," Head Coach Zubin Engineer said. "We came up a little short in singles. Chao-Yu Huang and Rakshit Rishi brought us very close to winning the match. These early matches are an excellent opportunity to implement the things we worked on in practice and see what we need to do next. The guys are resilient and will come back strong in the upcoming matches."
The Golden Eagles won the doubles point, posting wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Daniel Merker and Tarun Surat defeated Juuso Laitner and Sebastian Santibanez 6-4. Chao-Yu Huang and Wen-Po Tseng downed Jeandre Hoogenboezem and Nikita Lis in a tie-breaker 7-6 (6) to clinch the point.
Southern Miss won only two matches in the singles competition with Huang defeating Benny Schweizer at No. 3 by the score of 6-2, 6-3. Rakshit Rishi topped Steve McMullan in a three-set thriller, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
The Golden Eagles will travel to Mobile, Ala., for a pair of matches. Southern Miss plays South Alabama at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6, followed by a match against Alabama State at 2 p.m.
