Golden Eagles Start Strong at Emory Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Southern Miss men's and women's indoor track and field teams opened up the 2016 indoor season with three event winners at the Emory Invitational.
"We had some good opening performances from the team," head coach Jon Stuart said. "The momentum we built today will serve us well as we enter the meat of our schedule"
"I thought the sprint group started the day off strong and provided some energy to spark the rest of the team," said Stuart. "Mariam Kromah was fantastic. She won the 400 meters with a meet record. Kristen Zarella was very tough in the mile and Modesty Lorick looked great in the 60m hurdles."
Mariam Kromah captured the 400m dash with a meet record time of 55.34. Daphney Stanford secured a second place finish in the 3000 meters with a time of 10:10.74. Newcomer Modesty Lorick started her Southern Miss career off with a second place finish with a time of 8.60.
Other Golden Eagles with top ten finishes included Kristin Zarella and Alondra Hoyos finished in fifth and eighth place in the 1 mile run with times of 5:03.20 and 5:10.14, respectively. Kadaria Thompson had a fourth place finish in the 60m dash with a time of 7.69. Modesty Lorick in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.15 to place her fourth. Courtney Filliben in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:18.41. Vallerie Norgaisse had a fifth place finish in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.12.
On the men's side, Derrick Johnson got the men started with an event win, running a time of 6.95 in the 60m dash with teammates Jamad Smith and Robert Wells both running times of 6.97 to take the top three positions in the final.
Elbert Rogers won the 200m dash with a time of 21.88. Robert Wells and Derrick Johnson placed second and third with times of 21.96 and 21.99 respectively. Jamad Smith placed sixth with a time of 22.38.
Christopher Monroe and Jamar Sims jumped 6.64m and 6.51m, respectively in the long jump to place fourth and fifth. Lorenzen Burton placed sixth with a time of 49.99 in the 400m dash and Cameron Cox had a ninth place finish with a time of 50.65.
Kayla Taylor recorded a second place finish in the shot put with a toss of 13.06m, teammate Brashe Wood recorded a toss of 12.78m for fourth place. Wood also recorded a seventh place finish in the weight throw with a toss of 14.58m. Trista Barry recorded a third place finish in the high jump with a leap of 1.62m. Sharday Branch recorded a sixth place finish in the long jump with a jump of 5.32m.
"We have a big challenge ahead of us when we travel to Vanderbilt next week but we are ready," said Stuart.
