HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss track and field team travels to Birmingham, Ala. to compete in the Emory Invite at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Sunday, January 24,2016. An upwards of 15 teams are expected at the meet including Conference USA members Middle Tennessee State and Florida Atlantic.
With second year head coach Jon Stuart, the Golden Eagles are looking to open their season on the right foot after coming off of a strong fall semester of training.
"We are excited to start the season on Sunday. We have had a very good fall season with good weather and a lot of improvements from our athletes. They have high expectations for this meet and the entire season. As a team, we are looking forward to improving in the Conference USA standings," said Stuart. "It has been a long break for the team, a little longer than normal, but our athletes will be ready to go."
The 2016 squad has six returners that Stuart expects to lead the program. 2015 Indoor 400 meter conference champion, Elbert Rogers, is looking to defend his title this year. Christopher Monroe and Robert Wells are looking to improve on their school records in the triple jump and 200 meters, respectively. Regional qualifiers Derrick Johnson, Kayla Taylor, and Mariam Kromah are all looking to open their season with strong performances to kick start the year.
