Report: Southern Miss football continued preparation for Texas State on Wednesday afternoon at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility. The team worked out for two and a half hours in full pads, simulating game situations, working on ball security and practicing special teams.
Head Coach Todd Monken
Would you say the team has improved with edge / downfield blocking since last year?
"I think we can always improve but at the same time our guys have matured. Daythan (Davis) is in his second year and he will be better with all the little details that we ask him to do. D.J. (Thompson) is in a similar situation. He redshirted two years ago and wasn't really a starter last season. All the reps and little things that we do every day that allow you to improve our guys have gotten better at. I think our guys understand have a sense of urgency to where we are."
How has Darian Yancey come along compared to last year?
"He is in a more comfortable position. Darian is playing defensive end, which is a position he played all through high school. That's probably why. We tried him at linebacker but he got bigger and we thought we could use him on third downs. Since he has gained the weight, we are able to play him more. Also, he has only played in two games so he is only going to get better."
Defensive Back Deshadrick Truly
First road game this week, how has the preparation been for this game?
"We have just worked on our assignments. The team we play this week runs the option so it has been everyone doing their job and playing sound assignment football."
Next Game: at Texas State (6:00 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 19, ESPN 3)
