Upcoming: Practice (4:15 p.m., Friday, Aug. 21)
Report: Southern Miss football moved practice into The Rock on Thursday afternoon as the Golden Eagles took part in the first practice after fall camp. The Black and Gold battled the elements as rain fell the majority of the practice. Southern Miss ended the first practice after classes started a little early in an attempt to avoid potential lightning in the area. The team worked out for just under two hours, going about 10 periods running both team and individual drills.
Head Coach Todd Monken
How does practicing in the rain against the elements benefit the team?
"It always helps. Quarterbacks having to throw it; receivers' having to catch it; and it helps returners when you're doing special teams. All of that is important. You have to find a way to hold onto the ball and score points. The best team that executes in adverse conditions gives themselves the best chance to win."
The last couple of seasons have pointed to the running backs being a big strength to the offense do you feel that way coming into this season?
"I do more than ever. I've always felt like we've had talent there. I'm not sure that we maximized it. I do feel like adding Justice (Hayes) to it, having Jalen (Richard) who has had a great first two and a half weeks is healthy also Ito (Smith) and Tez (Parks) being a year older helps. We have more depth than ever and we have more talent."
Next Game: vs. Mississippi State (9 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 5, Fox Sports 1)
