HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss baseball team looks to extend its season-best, six-game winning streak when they entertain Conference USA foe Charlotte in its final regular-season home series this weekend at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Game times for the three Charlotte contests include a 6 p.m., first pitch on Friday, followed by a single contest at 2 p.m., Saturday, and an 11 a.m., series finale on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles (28-16-1 overall, 13-10 C-USA) are 4-0 on their final seven-game homestand that started with the longest game in school history, a 17-inning, 7-6 victory over South Alabama, Apr. 29, and also has included a three-game sweep last weekend of league foe Marshall, which included a pair of shutouts by Golden Eagle pitchers.
The team currently resides in fourth place in the C-USA standings and look to improve on that standing this weekend with the tournament slated in less than two weeks for Pete Taylor Park, May 20-24.
Southern Miss and the 49ers (17-24, 10-14) renewed their rivalry last season after a 10-year hiatus in the series. The Golden Eagles won two of three last season at Charlotte, who were members of C-USA from 1996-2004 before rejoining the league in 2014, and have now won the last five conference series from the 49ers.
This series also marks the final regular-season home weekend for eight Golden Eagle seniors including centerfielder Connor Barron (Hattiesburg, Miss.), designated hitter Matt Durst (Whitehouse, Texas), right-handed pitcher James McMahon (Hattiesburg, Miss.), right-handed pitcher Ryan Milton (Albany, La.), catcher Austin Roussel (Hester, La.), shortstop Michael Sterling (Meridian, Miss.), right-handed pitcher Christian Talley (Diamondhead, Miss.) and catcher Candler Thomas (Glendale, Ariz.).
Following the Charlotte series, the Golden Eagles take to the road for a Tuesday makeup contest at Tulane (5 p.m.) of a April 14 rainout and then finish the regular season next Thursday-Saturday at league leader Middle Tennessee.
