HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss baseball team returns to Conference USA play this weekend when they travel to San Antonio to face UTSA in a three-game league set. The series begins at Roadrunner Field Friday with a 6 p.m., contest, and follows with a 2 p.m., tilt on Saturday and a 12 noon finale on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles (22-14-1) won its only midweek contest by upending ULM at home on Tuesday night 9-3. Southern Miss has won seven of its last 10 contests heading into this weekend's play.
This will be only the second season the two school will meet in baseball. The pair played five times last season with Southern Miss registering a 3-2 mark, all of the games coming in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles captured the regular-season series in dramatic fashion as Dylan Burdeaux recorded a game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth in the finale.
The two teams split a pair of games in the C-USA Tournament, but the Roadrunners captured the final meeting which vaulted them into the championship game. UTSA (24-17, 10-8) enters the weekend having won two games, including the series finale last weekend at Rice.
Senior James McMahon, who will make his normal start on Sunday, was one of 46 pitchers Thursday to be named to the National Pitcher of the Year initial watch list. McMahon, who is 7-1 this season with a 1.81 earned run average, is the only pitcher in Conference USA to make this list.
Following the UTSA series, the Golden Eagles finish their four-game road swing Tuesday night against Alabama in Hoover. Sewell-Thomas Stadium, the normal facility for the Crimson Tide is under renovations this season, forcing the Tide to play most of their home games at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
