BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Southern Miss softball team fell 8-0 on Sunday afternoon on the road to Western Kentucky at the WKU Softball Complex in Bowling Green, Ky.
Samantha Reynolds and Bailey Stokes each recorded hits in the game. Stokes singled to left field and was able to advance to second on an error by Western Kentucky. Stokes also drew her team-leading 31st walk in the game. She is now tied with Amanda Brown for sixth place in Southern Miss' Top 10 single-season records for walks.
In the circle, the Golden Eagles used three pitchers. Danielle Block earned the start and was charged with the loss. She allowed five runs (four earned runs) on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout in 2.0 innings of work. She gave way to Emily Wood, who surrendered three runs on three hits with a strikeout in 0.2 innings. Shelbee Rodgers closed out the game. She worked the final 1.1 innings allowing no runs on three hits, no walks and a pair of strikeouts.
Western Kentucky was the first team to plate a run, taking the lead in the bottom of the first inning. The leadoff batter singled to left center field and stole second to move into scoring position. The next batter dropped a bloop single just inside the right field line behind first base for a RBI single, giving the Lady Toppers a 1-0 lead in the first.
WKU added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, the Lady Toppers used a double to right field to place a runner in scoring position. The Golden Eagles used a shallow fly ball to center field to record the second out. The next batter Kayti Hanson doubled to left field, scoring the lead runner. On the play, WKU used a fielding error by USM to allow Hanson to score as well. Block closed the inning with strikeout, but the Golden Eagles trailed 3-0.
The Lady Toppers provided the final score with five runs in the bottom of the third inning. WKU's Carleigh Chaumont led off the inning with a solo home run. The next batter followed with a walk and a single gave WKU a pair of base runners. After two outs, a single loaded the bases. With the bases loaded, the next batter hit a ball towards first base. Katie Cleary fielded the ball, but the runner beat a diving Cleary to the base. Cleary popped up and threw home, but the second run slid under the tag. The Golden Eagles threw to second to try to retire the trail runner who was advancing, but an errant throw cleared the bases. WKU added a single and a double, but Southern Miss was able to end the inning with a strikeout.
