HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team puts a four-game winning streak on the line this weekend when they entertain Oakland for three games at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The two teams, which will meet for the first time in the sport of baseball, play a 6 p.m., single contest on Friday, before completing the series with 1 p.m., single games on both Saturday and Sunday.
The Golden Eagles (7-4-1) continue to get solid pitching as the staff has posted a 2.08 team earned run average through the first 12 games. Before allowing a run in the top of the eighth on Wednesday against Ole Miss, Southern Miss had not allowed a run in the previous 25 2/3 innings.
The pitching staff has collected a total of eight quality starts (three earned runs or less with at least six innings pitched) to start the year and has notched 91 strikeouts in 104 innings of work.
Over the four-game win streak, Southern Miss has committed just one error and, offensively, the squad has gotten some timely hitting. Senior Matt Durst, who holds the current best hitting streak on the roster at five games, has a .389 batting average with a homer and six RBI. Fellow senior, Connor Barron, has put together a .341 average with three homers and seven RBI, while junior Tim Lynch is at 333 with three homers and eight RBI.
The Golden Eagles play an Oakland squad (0-8) that is winless this season, but has played a monster road schedule thus far, losing three at both Florida State and Southern California and two at Arizona.
Following the Oakland series, the Golden Eagles remain home with a pair of midweek contests against South Dakota State, Tuesday, March 10, and Tulane, Wednesday, March 11. Both of those games are slated to start at 6 p.m.
