
Seven-Run Innings Lifts Softball to Split with UTEP

EL PASO, Texas - The Southern Miss softball team split a doubleheader on the road with UTEP on Saturday afternoon at Helen of Troy Field in El Paso, Texas. The Golden Eagles (16-17, 2-9 Conference USA) dropped the first game 7-5 before earning a 13-6 victory over the Miners (9-24, 4-4 C-USA) in the night cap.
Offensively, Southern Miss recorded 21 hits on the day, including a home run, a triple and four doubles. Arielle Pollock hit her first collegiate home run in game two, helping the Golden Eagles to the easy victory. Sarah Evans led the team with four hits, including a pair of doubles, while Morgan McKeever and Katie Cleary each added three hits apiece. Pollock, Jordan Beck, Kaelyn Christofferson and Selena Estrada each had two hits on the day. McKeever had a triple, while Cleary and Estrada added a doubles. Jenifer Gary led the team with four RBI on the day, delivering a pair of pinch hit singles. McKeever led the team with three runs scored.
In the circle, Danielle Block and Shelbee Rodgers each tossed complete games on the day. Rodgers took the hard-luck loss in game one, while Block earned her fifth victory of the season.
In game one, Rodgers tossed 6.2 innings, allowing seven runs on 11 hits with no walks and four strikeouts. In game two, Block surrendered 11 hits in 7.0 innings of work. She allowed six runs (five earned runs) with no walks and six strikeouts. Block was one K shy of tying her career high.
Southern Miss and UTEP will conclude the three-game series with a single game on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. CT (noon MT). Live stats, live video and in-game tweets will be available throughout the game.
