HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team returned to the Joe P. Park Practice Facility for the second spring practice of the year. The team worked out in shorts and helmets for just over two hours on a beautiful St. Patrick's Day.
"It was a really good Day 2," head coach Todd Monken said after practice. "I really thought our energy, our attitude and our body language was good. They started off the right way. The competition has been outstanding. I like our guys. They enjoy being around each other and playing for each other."
Competition is a key attribute early in the spring practice. Each position group has guys vying for playing time once the season starts. The competition gets amped up on Thursday as the team will practice in pads for the first time.
"I am excited to see us Thursday put the pads on," Monken added. "It comes down to making plays with pads on. A lot of people look good with shorts on. We will find out on Thursday what steps we have taken in that area."
"Someone is going to rise to the top. That is the good thing about the competition part of it. I expect to see certain guys to push forward as we continue."
Southern Miss returns to practice on Thursday as the Golden Eagles put on pads for the first time this spring. Practice is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m. at Joe P. Park Practice Facility. The workout is open to the general public.
