HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Sophomore Carolin Drescher honed her tennis skills at a very young age in her hometown of Erfstadt, Germany.
"My whole family plays tennis so they put me on the court when I was 4 years old. I played tournaments and liked it," Drescher said. Since then, her parents have been her biggest supporters because they've encouraged her through both wins and losses.
At a young age, Drescher knew she could compete internationally because of her high ranking. Through hard work and training every day, she continued to improve until she was recruited by USM.
Drescher always dreamed of playing tennis and studying at the same time, and being a Division I athlete at Southern Miss is her biggest achievement so far. Drescher's favorite part about playing collegiate tennis is competing against other universities to see how good she is. In her freshman season, she posted 19 wins and was named Second Team All-Conference USA.
From her experience as a student athlete, Drescher has advice for young tennis players. "It's not as easy as people think, you need to be able to compete academically and athletically. Follow your dreams!"
Drescher is an exercise science major because she loves sports and working with athletes. After graduation she plans to become a physical therapist, while keeping in contact with her USM teammates.
