Men's Tennis Team Tops Incarnate Word 5-2

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Southern Miss men's tennis team defeated incarnate Word 5-2 Monday afternoon at the Mabry Tennis Center in San Antonio, Texas. Golden Eagles improved to 5-3.
"The doubles was difficult in very windy and cold conditions," head coach Zubin Engineer said. "In singles, the team stepped up and took responsibility winning 5 out of 6 singles matches to secure a 5-2 team win. This was a good weekend where the team gained experience and learnt about themselves and other teams."
The Cardinals (3-5) opened the match by taking the doubles points. The Golden Eagle duo of Alex Doleac and Brad Marriott defeated Josip Smoljan and Ryan Hoverson on court 3, 8-1. Incarnate Word's Tucker Brown and Joey Vatanadilok evened things up with an 8-3 win over Tarun Surat and Daniel Merker at the two-spot. UIW's Leonard Ivic and Philipp Raickovic downed Chao-Yu Huang and Wen-Po Tseng 8-5 at No. 1 to secure the first point of the match.
In singles action, the Golden Eagles tied the score as Huang defeated Tucker Brown at No. 3, 6-2, 6-3. Mikhail Esipov up Southern Miss up 2-1 when he picked a 6-4, 6-3 over Hoverson on court six. Doleac then defeated Vatanadilok 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 to increase the lead to 3-1. Merker then clinched the victory with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 decision over Raickovic at the No. 5 spot.
UIW's Ivic topped Surat at the top spot 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 in securing a point for the Cardinals on court one. The Golden Eagles added their fifth point when Tseng fought back from a set down 6-0, to take the final two sets 7-6 (3), 6-2 against Smoljan on court two.
Southern Miss hits the courts again when the Golden Eagles host South Alabama on Feb. 22 at 1 p.m.
