Men's Tennis Edged by UTA 4-3

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Southern Miss men's tennis team fell to UT Arlington 4-3 on Saturday at the UTSA Tennis Center. Southern Miss dropped to 4-2 while UTA improved to 5-2.
"The team got off to a good start in doubles winning convincingly at No. 1 and No. 3," head coach Zubin Engineer said. "Everyone competed well and we came up a little short in singles. Wen Po Tseng and Mikhail Esipov pulled off good wins in singles. The early matches are important to learn how we can get better and improve every time we step on the court."
Southern Miss took the doubles point to start the match. Chao-Yu Huang and Wen-Po Tseng defeat Mario Muniesa and Daniel Armegol (UTA), 6-1, at No. 1. Alex Doleac and Brad Marriott downed Pablo Colvee and Sebastian Erimicioiu (UTA) on court 3, 6-2, to clinch the doubles point.
Tarun Surat and Daniel Merker trailed Johnathan Gonzalez and Carlos Arbiza (UTA) 4-5 before the match was stopped.
In singles, UTA battled back to take four of the six singles. At No. 4, Doleac lost to Gonzalez in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Tseng defeated Stefan Williams in the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 7-6 (5). The Mavericks followed with a win at No. 3 when Armegol defeated Huang, 6-3, 6-3.
The remaining three matches had to be decided in three sets. Mikhail Esipov fell 6-2 in the first set, but rebounded to win the second and third sets, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 6 spot. Erimicioiu claimed a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over Surat at No. 1. UTA finished the match taking the win at No. 5 as Arbiza defeated Merker 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.
Southern Miss is back in action Sunday against UTSA at 11 a.m.
