HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss basketball team travels to Mobile, Ala. for a nonconference game against South Alabama on Monday, December 14. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Center and the game can be heard on the IMG Sports Network with the Voice of the Golden Eagles John Cox handling the play-by-play.
Because of the game on Monday night, Golden Eagle Hotline with head coach Doc Sadler will not be held this week at Mugshots Grill and Bar. The Golden Eagle Hotline will resume next week on Monday night from 7-8 p.m.
Southern Miss enters the week with a 1-6 overall record, coming off of a 74-62 victory at home against North Dakota State. The game saw four Golden Eagle players in double figures with three players -- Quinton Campbell (17), Eddie Davis III (16) and Tim Rowe (6) -- notching career-high scoring performances. Eight of the 10 players who saw action in the game scored in the overall team effort.
South Alabama comes into the game with a 3-5 overall record. The Jaguars are 2-0 at home, but Monday will mark nine days since South Alabama last took the court in a 68-55 loss at Middle Tennessee.
The Golden Eagles lead the all-time series 24-15 (.615) against the Jaguars. Southern Miss is 11-8 all-time against South Alabama in Mobile. The Golden Eagles have won three consecutive games against the Jaguars in Mobile. Overall, Southern Miss has won five consecutive games against South Alabama.
Last season, Southern Miss closed the game on a 21-9 run over the final 4:10 to erase a 10-point deficit to defeat South Alabama, 68-59, at Reed Green Coliseum.
In the last four games, the Golden Eagle defense has stepped up, holding opponents to under 70 points in each game. In seven games this year, the defense has kept the opposition to under 70 in five games. In 36 games under Sadler, Southern Miss has limited opponents to 70 points or less in 22 times.
