Getting to Know ... Jayla King

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- With the season-opener approaching and just nine days away for the women's basketball team to tip off against Alabama State on Nov. 13 in the Preseason WNIT, a Lady Eagle player will be featured as part of the countdown.
Redshirt guard/forward Jayla King will be featured in this countdown.
According to Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis, King brings a lot of energy to the team. She can play several positions whether it's on the wing or as an undersized power forward. She has excellent speed and quickness that aids her in being an outstanding defender. She has the ability to create her own shot and runs the floor well.
In her first season at Southern Miss, King has to sit out the season to satisfy NCAA transfer requirement. She played one season at South Florida where she appeared in 11 games, scoring 15 points. She shot 50 percent from the field and 80 percent from the line.
King was a standout high school player at Pine Forrest High School in Pensacola, Fla. She was a first team all-state performer for three consecutive years. She was tabbed the Pensacola News Journal Player of the Year in 2013. She earned the team's best offensive player award from 2010 to 2013. She played for the Florida Girls' Basketball program and was rated by Florida Inside Report as one of the best recruits from the south. King also lettered three years in volleyball. She is the daughter of Cedric and DeShawn King. She is an interdisciplinary study major.
