Basketball Hits Road for Midweek Tilt at Troy

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss basketball team returns to the road with a midweek game at Troy on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at Trojan Arena in Troy, Ala. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
The Golden Eagles (0-4) are 13-0 all-time against the Trojans (3-3), including a 2-0 record in Troy. The two teams have met nine times in Hattiesburg with four meetings taking place at Reed Green Coliseum. Southern Miss and Troy have also played a pair of neutral site games, with the teams meeting twice in Cleveland, Miss. in the NAIA District 19 Playoffs.
The teams first met with a pair of games during the 1949-50 season. Southern Miss posted a 66-51 victory on the road in the first meeting between the two teams on Jan. 21, 1950. The two teams met again one month later with the Golden Eagles notching a 64-57 victory at home.
The following year, Southern Miss and Troy met again for a pair of games. The Golden Eagles posted an 86-53 victory on Dec. 4, 1950 before notching an 80-43 win just under a week later (Dec. 9, 1950).
The Golden Eagles and Trojans played five more times in the 50s with Southern Miss earning victories in 1951 (W, 103-47), 1953 (W, 90-49), 1954 (W, 70-61), 1956 (W, 49-44), and 1958 (W, 73-51).
The two teams took a break from playing each other until Jan. 19, 1974 when the Golden Eagles posted an 83-75 victory at Reed Green Coliseum over the Trojans for the 10th win in the series for Southern Miss.
On Dec. 12, 1999, the series was once again revived. Southern Miss recorded a 61-46 win at Reed Green. Three years later, the Golden Eagles won a 77-70 decision over the Trojans.
Last season, Norville Carey's steal and dunk with 5.7 seconds left in the game capped off a nine-point second half comeback, as Southern Miss defeated Troy, 72-70, Reed Green Coliseum.
The Golden Eagles enter the game looking for their first victory of the season. The team has been balanced with four different players leading the team in scoring in the opening four games of the season. Five different players have combined to lead the team in the first four games in rebounding.
The Trojans opened the season with a pair of victories before dropping the next three contests. In their last outing, Troy notched an 86-74 road win at C-USA opponent North Texas.
