- Team Notes
 - Today's captains were quarterback wide receiver Markese Triplett, linebacker Brian Anderson and defensive linemen Dasman McCullum and Nic Bekkers.
 - Rice won the toss and received.
 - Today's attendance was 24,756.
 - Southern Miss is 1-4 all-time against Rice, including 1-2 in Hattiesburg.
 - *he Golden Eagles are 13-6 in Conference USA openers and 7-4 when opening the league schedule at home. They have lost their last three C-USA openers.
 - Southern Miss has lost nine straight home conference games.
 - The Golden Eagles trailed 20-10 at the half. It is the 12th consecutive conference game that they trailed at halftime.
 Offensive Notes
- Quarterback Nick Mullens was 24-of-45 for a season-high 283 yards and two touchdowns.
 - Wide receiver Michael Thomas caught a 30-yard touchdown in the second quarter. It was his first career touchdown and the longest reception of his career.
 - Mullens connected with James Cox on a 41-yard reception in the third quarter. It was the longest pass and catch of the season for both.
 - Cox caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Mullens in the fourth quarter. It was his second touchdown of the year and fourth of his career.
 - Mullens now has five touchdown passes on the year and 18 for his career.
 - Running back George Payne scored on a one-yard run in the third quarter. It was his third rushing touchdown of the year and fourth of his career.
 Defensive Notes
- Southern Miss recorded a season-high nine-tackles for loss.
 - Defensive back Picasso Nelson, Jr. recorded an interception for the second straight game.
 - The interception gives the Golden Eagles six on the year, the most since recording 19 in 2011.
 - Southern Miss has now forced a turnover in six straight games dating back to last season.
 - Defensive lineman Dasman McCullum recorded his second sack of the year in the third quarter. It was the fifth of his career.
 Special Teams Notes
- Kicker Corey Acosta connected on a career-long 52-yard field goal in the second quarter. It was his second field goal of at least 50 yards on the season.
 - Acosta missed on an extra point in the third quarter. It was his first missed extra point since 2012.
