HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team took to the game field at M.M. Roberts Stadium for a two-hour practice on Tuesday afternoon. The team wore shoulder pads and shorts, although with frigid temperatures, long sleeves and sweatpants were common among the players and coaches.
Head coach Todd Monken and the team moved practice up an hour to try to take advantage warmer temperatures under sun. Monken said he did not feel like the weather was a factor during the team's practice. The football team is using the bye week to focus on fundamentals and try to get players healthy.
"It was fine," Monken said. "Bye week. One game left. I thought the energy was there. We were able to rep all of our guys.
"We went earlier," added Monken. "We didn't meet beforehand. We went out there to try to get as much of the sun as we could on the turf."
As a result of practicing earlier, the team and coaches concluded practice with team and position meetings.
The team is preparing for the season finale against Conference USA rival UAB slated for Saturday, Nov. 29 at The Rock. The game will be Senior Day and the team's seniors will be honored prior to kickoff. The game between the Golden Eagles and Blazers is slated for 2:30 p.m. and will be aired on the American Sports Network (ASN).
