HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's basketball team officially opened in preparation for the 2014-15 season with a 7:30 a.m. practice in Reed Green Coliseum.
According the Coach Joye Lee-McNelis, emphasis of the first practice was placed on basic fundamentals with emphasizing passing and post entry. The team also included drills that concentrated on defensive intensity, closing out low and high hands.
The Lady Eagles return nine letterwinners including four starters from last year's team that finished with a school-tying 27 wins. Southern Miss added five newcomers in the form of one senior college transfer four freshmen.
"The effort was very good this morning," McNelis said. "We threw the ball all over the gym and had multiple turnovers. I thing that's somewhat expected when you go as hard as we were going and our intensity level was that high. When you're watching and observing, you can see a lot of bright spots."
Practices for the Lady Eagles are scheduled at 8 a.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. on Saturday as the team continues preparation for the 2014-15 season. The Lady Eagles tip-off the season against West Florida on Nov. 8 at 12 p.m. in an exhibition game with the official tip-off set for Nov. 14 against William Carey at 11 a.m.
