Women's Basketball Travels to UAB for Thursday Matchup

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's basketball team travels to Birmingham Ala., for a matchup against UAB on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Southern Miss Preview
Southern Miss (11-8, 3-3) is coming off a 76-57 win over Rice as Jamierra Faulkner and Ance Celmina posted double-doubles. Faulkner netted a game-high 26 points while dishing out a career-high and school record tying 16 assists. The assists were a C-USA record for most assists in a league game and the second most overall in all games. Celmina added career highs in points and rebounds with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Tanecka Carey and Jerontay Clemons chipped in 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Faulkner, Carey and Clemons continue to pace the Lady Eagles in scoring. Faulkner is tops at 17.7 points with Carey next at 15.9 and Clemons at 10.5 points. Clemons also paces the team in rebounds, averaging 6.6 per game.
Southern Miss is averaging 63.9 points and 39.6 rebounds while shooting 39.6 percent from the field and 62.5 percent from the line. The Lady Eagle defense allows 62.8 points on 38.9 percent shooting from the field. The team is forcing its opponents into 20.9 turnovers per game while coming up with 10.3 steals per game.
Scouting UAB UAB brings a 13-5 overall record and 4-1 in league play following a 61-45 win over Marshall on Sunday. Amber Jones paced four players in double figure scoring with a game-high 21 points followed by Karisma Chapman with 18, Ashley Grimes had 12 and Michaelea Kleist chipped in 10. Kleist also led the team with seven rebounds.
Jones leads the team in scoring with 13.9 points per game while Chapman is next at 12.9 and Grimes adds 11.0 points per game. Chapman also paces the team in rebounding with 6.6 boards per game.
The Blazers are averaging 62.9 points and 37.4 rebounds per game while shooting 39.1 percent from the field and 68.7 percent from the line. UAB leads the league in scoring defense, allowing only 52.9 points per game.
Southern Miss vs. UAB Series
This is the 53rd meeting between the two teams in a series that began in 1979 with UAB winning that matchup in Birmingham. Southern Miss leads the overall series 34-18. The teams split the series last season with each winning at home.
Following the UAB game, Southern Miss returns home to host Tulsa on Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. as part of National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
