Volleyball Falls to Sugar Bears

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team dropped its second match after falling to visiting Central Arkansas in three sets Saturday morning in the Southern Miss Invitational.
Jasmine Crowell, Halie Ecker and Lydia Bonner all netted eight kills apiece for the Golden Eagles. Elizabeth Rinaudo came up with 11 digs while Quinci Hayward recorded five blocks.
Central Arkansas used a 13-8 run midway through the first set to go up 18-13 and then finished off the set connecting on seven kills for the 25-16 win.
UCA had to overcome an eight-point deficit as the Sugar Bears used a 10-1 run in closing out the second set for a 25-23 win. Southern Miss led early, 20-12, but could not sustain the momentum allowing UCA a 2-0 advantage heading into the break.
UCA jumped out to a commanding lead and never looked back. The Eagles' offense struggled to get on track as UCA claimed the third and final set, 26-16.
Taylor Hammonds led a trio of Sugar Bears with 14 kills followed by Jessica Hays with 13 and Scout Brooks added 10. Shelbee Berringer tallied a match-high 21 digs while Marissa Collins collected 51 assists.
"We saw improvements in several areas today," coach Abbey Sutherland said. "Now we have to learn how to battle and to finish matches."
Southern Miss continues action with the final match of the evening against Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m.
