Southern Miss Announces Themes for 2012 Home Football Schedule

HATTIESBURG, Miss.- The Southern Miss Department of Athletics, in conjunction with the 100 Years of Athletics, have announced the themes for the six Golden Eagle football games for the upcoming season. The theme of this athletic year is "Celebrating 100 Years of Championships and Commencements."
Each game is themed around a key word that has enabled the University to thrive over its first 100 years and one of the school's five colleges will be honored during a game.
"Our themes have been designed to be integrated with our 100 Year celebration and we are excited that they could be packaged with a great home schedule," said Southern Miss Athletics Director Jeff Hammond. "Our goal is to recognize not only the champions of our past but also honor our University and its colleges for its success over its first 100 years."
The home season opens Sept. 15 against East Carolina in a 2:30 p.m., contest. While it is "FTTT" - meaning Fill To The Top - to start the season at home against the Pirates, the game will also "Be Prepared." The theme is an homage to the school's very first contest where the Golden Eagles, then known as the Southerners, defeated the Hattiesburg Boy Scouts, 100 years ago at Kamper Park. As part of the 1st game of the 100 years of Southern Miss Athletics the Golden Eagles will honor the Boy Scouts that night.
The Pride of Mississippi, The University of Southern Mississippi's band will be hosting their annual All-South Band Day which will highlight and showcase area high schools who will also have a chance to perform with The Pride during the game. The College of Arts and Letters will also be recognized during this game. Also all fans are being asked to show their Golden Eagle Pride by wearing the school's colors in the different sections that they sit in. All fans sitting on the East Side of the Stadium are being asked to wear GOLD, all fans in the South End Zone are asked to wear WHITE, and all fans on the west side of the stadium are asked to wear BLACK.
Southern Miss returns home on Sept. 29, to entertain Louisville in a 7 p.m., contest in a themed game called "Tradition." It will be the school's annual BLACKOUT game where all fans in attendance are asked to wear black in show of support for their Golden Eagles. The 2012 BLACKOUT t-shirt design has been finalized and fans can purchase these t-shirts at their favorite store that sells Southern Miss apparel. It will also be Junior College Day where all Junior College and Community College faculty, staff, and students will receive discounted admission into the game when they present their Junior College/ Community College ID.
During the game the newest members of the M-Club Hall of Fame will be recognized and honored. The Southern Miss cheerleaders will be hosting a pre game children's cheer clinic where participants will also have a chance to perform on the field with the cheerleaders prior to the game. The College of Business will be recognized.
The following weekend, Oct. 6 against Boise State in a time to be determined, has been dubbed the "Champions" game and recognitions will be made to the five Conference USA (1996, 1997, 1999, 2003, and 2011) and three Gulf States Championship squads (1948, 1950, 1951), as was well as the 1958 and 1962 National Championship squads. It will also be Breast Cancer Awareness Day at The Rock as the month of October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, while the College of Health will be recognized.
Marshall then comes to town on Oct. 20, at 6 p.m., for homecoming in a game dubbed "Honor." Southern Miss Athletics will be honoring all Southern Miss alums during the homecoming game. The Golden Eagle Football team will wear their throwback uniform that highlights the 1970's football team look. The homecoming court will be featured at halftime of the game with the crowning of the king and queen during this ceremony. The College of Nursing will be honored for this contest.
The Golden Eagles then welcome UAB to town on Nov. 3, for a 6:30 p.m., start time with the theme of this game being "Commencements." All Southern Miss faculty and staff are eligible to buy one ticket get one ticket free in honor of their service and dedication for the university. It will also be Take a Kid to a Game for free. All children 12 and under will receive free admission with the purchase of an adult ticket. The College of Education and Psychology will be honored for this contest.
In the final home game, themed "Character," Southern Miss plays host to UTEP on Nov. 17 in a 7 p.m., contest. The senior football players will be honored in a pregame ceremony. This game will also serve as the annual Military Appreciation game where all branches of the military including retired, reserved, and active members will be honored for their service. The University will also be hosting their annual Black and Gold Recruiting weekend as well as a special Family Weekend package. The Southern Miss College of Science and Technology will be recognized.
