HATTIESBURG, Miss. - As the regular season draws closer, Southern Miss Athletics will present a weekly question and answer session with a Golden Eagle football player.
In the series' third installment, we sit down with Golden Eagle quarterback Chris Campbell. Campbell, a redshirt junior, has been under the study of former Golden Eagle quarterback Austin Davis and now looks to beat out the competition to become the starter in 2012. In the 2012 Black and Gold game, Campbell was 12-for-18 for 167 yards with one touchdown. He also added 17 yards on four rushes. What have you learned from Coach Ellis Johnson?
Coach Johnson is a great guy. I've learned a lot about responsibility and discipline from him. He preaches it on and off the field, and that you have responsibilities in the classroom. He also preaches responsibility and discipline in how you present yourself to the public, and those are the two biggest things I've learned from him so far.
What has been one of the highlights of your football career?
Being Austin Davis' backup for the past two years and winning the conference championship was a lifetime experience with some great memories.
What is one of your favorite things about football?
Just being around great guys and great coaches all the time, and I consider them my bothers. I live close to and hang out with a lot of those same guys, so naturally that has a lot to do with why I love football.
Whom do you look up to as a mentor?
Austin Davis, again. Even when I was a freshman, he was always in front of me and a mentor as well. I watched him on the field, but also how he conducted himself off the field in that manner.
In your childhood, what were some of your favorite memories?
Working with my dad and just playing football in the yard had to be some of my best football-related memories. Aside from that, duck hunting. My family loves to duck hunt so we have many memories doing that.
Who's your favorite football player?
I'd have to say John Elway. I remember when I was a little kid I would always watch him and I loved his playing style.
If you could tell fans one thing, what would it be?
Get ready for a good year. We're working hard to win another conference championship, because that's our goal.
