MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Beth Dietrich pitched 10 innings of softball on Sunday and did not allow a run as the Southern Miss softball team split a Sunday Conference USA doubleheader with Memphis at the Tiger Softball Complex.
Southern Miss was shutout for just the fourth time this season in the opening game and the Memphis Tigers held on for a 2-0 series clinching victory.
In the series finale, the Golden Eagles rebounded behind a solid outing from Beth Dietrich to take the third game 2-1.
Game 1:
Memphis scratched their first run of the day in the second inning as Ashley Palmieri laced a two-out triple into the gap in left center to bring in Sara Pearson from second. Pearson, the leadoff batter of the inning, singled and advanced a base on a one-out wild pitch.
Laura Curtis extended the Memphis lead in the third with her second roundtripper of the season, a solo shot to left field.
Memphis starter Jordan Richwood carried a perfect game bid into the fifth inning and had retired the first 14 Golden Eagles she faced before Carissa Turang laced a single into center field to record the first hit of the game for Southern Miss.
The Tigers held on as Richwood (3-7) kept the Golden Eagles off the bases to earn the victory and lock up the series.
Courtney Ramos suffered the loss after throwing three innings of four-hit softball. She allowed both runs and struck out two batters.
Game 2:
The Tigers struck first again in the opening inning as Curtis drove in a run with a double down the left line.
In the fourth, the Golden Eagles got their equalizer when Caroline Walker began the inning with a double to the gap in left field. After Chanell Thurman's single up the middle pushed her to third, Turang's sacrifice fly brought her in to make it 1-1.
Southern Miss took the lead later in the inning with Thurman coming in on Mackenzie Sher's two-out single to the shortstop.
Memphis threatened in the fifth and sixth, but a pair of great defensive stops from Thurman - including one double play - kept the Tigers of the board in both frames.
Beth Dietrich, who came in to relieve starter Gabby Luciani after the first three batters of the game, retired 21 of the 24 batters she faced to earn the victory. Dietrich (5-8) scattered four hits and did not allow a run while striking out two. Ellen Roberts (6-13) suffered the loss on 4.2 innings of work while allowing six hits and two runs.
Next up for the Golden Eagles is another trip back to Ridgeland for the second time in a week. Up for Southern Miss is another in-state foe in Mississippi State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. from Freedom Ridge.
