Golden Eagle Softballers Defeated by Louisiana Tech on Sunday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Between both teams, Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech for a combined 23 hits and 19 runs, with the Golden Eagles coming out on the wrong side of a 13-6 decision on Sunday at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
Senior hurler Courtney Ramos (1-3) and the Golden Eagles fell into early trouble in the first as the Lady Techsters went through ten batters, posting four runs on three hits early on to take the 4-0 lead.
Louisiana Tech (6-7) added a single run in the top of the second to push their lead to five. In the bottom of the frame, the Golden Eagles (4-5) evened it up and scored four runs off of Louisiana Tech's Erin Kipp, who tossed Carissa Turang an outside pitch which she took opposite field scoring Caroline Walker for the Eagles' first run. Singles by Leslie LeJune and Mackenzie Sher bought the Eagles three more runs making the score 5-4 in favor of the visitors.
Southern Miss battled back in the third as they met the Lady Techsters at 6-6 after Turang loaded the bases with a single, allowing Danielle LaPointe and Madison Edwards to pick up an RBI each.
In the fifth, Tech took the lead again, putting Ramos to the test of their entire lineup. The Lady Techsters forced four walks, and took advantage of an Eagle defensive error and two hard hit balls to left field to put them back on the upside at 10-6.
In the sixth, a second Eagle defensive error and a third RBI from Tech's Janna Frandrup pushed the Techster lead to 12-6. In the bottom frame the host team was unable to produce a run, leaving two runners on base.
Katelynn Hill capped off the scoring in the seventh with a lone roundtripper to left-center for the final score of 13-6.
Ramos (1-3) suffered up the loss, working seven innings and allowing fourteen hits, ten earned runs, nine walks and three strikeouts. Frandrup picked up the win for Tech posting four innings of work, allowing three hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.
Next up for Southern Miss is a trip to the west coast for the Cal State Fullerton Demarini Invitational. The team will take on California and Cal State Fullerton on Friday, March 2, Michigan State and Indiana on March 3 and Northwestern on March 4.
