HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Following their dramatic 19-17 season opening victory over Louisiana Tech, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles worked out inside M.M. Roberts Stadium on Tuesday as they prepared to open their conference slate at Marshall.
Saturday's matchup in Huntington, W.V., will open the conference slate for the Golden Eagles (1-0) as they begin their quest for a Conference USA championship.
The Golden Eagles are 3-0 at Marshall and 5-1 all-time against the Thundering Herd (0-1). In their 2010 matchup, Southern Miss took away a 41-16 victory in Hattiesburg.
For coach Larry Fedora, the just over two-hour session wasn't enough time as the team gets ready for their first road contest of the season.
"There's never enough time. Never enough reps," said Fedora. "That's just how it works."
The talk among the media that the fourth-year coach addressed was the Southern Miss running game on a day where offensive players were available to talk.
"We've got to do a better job of blocking on the perimeter. Offensive linemen have to do a better job of blocking inside. Runningbacks have to do a better job (hitting the gaps), and quarterbacks have to do a better job as well," added Fedora.
The team will return to the practice field tomorrow afternoon to continue installing their gameplan for the week.
This week's game can be viewed on the Charter Sports South network. The game also will be carried on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network with the "Voice of the Golden Eagles" John Cox and analyst Vic Purvis describing all the action.
Single-game and season tickets are still available for the remaining five games on the 2011 Golden Eagle football schedule by going online at SouthernMiss.com, calling the USM Athletic Ticket Office at 800-844-TICK (8425) or visiting the Pat Ferlise Center Monday through Friday from 8 a.m., until 5 p.m.
