Volleyball Travels To Husky Classic

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The volleyball team (4-5) travels to the Husky Classic this weekend in Houston, Texas. The Golden Eagles take on Louisiana Tech on Friday at 11 a.m., before facing the host Houston Baptist at 7 p.m., and closing out action on Saturday with Southeastern Louisiana at 11 a.m.

Southern Miss enters the weekend with a 4-5 record, after a 1-2 weekend at the Marquette/Milwaukee Invitational. Senior outside hitter Ashley Mell was named to the all-tournament team. For the season, Junior outside hitter Halie Ecker leads the team with 3.28 kills per set. Senior setter Kelsea Seymour is averaging 9.58 assists per set as senior libero Lisa Knecht is providing 4.76 digs per set for the year. Lauren Sears is leading the team with 37 total blocks as SJ Bowden ranks second with 24. As a team, Southern Miss is hitting .131 with 12.09 kills per set with 0.85 service aces per set, 17.55 digs per set and 2.30 blocks per set.
Scouting Louisiana Tech
The Bulldogs enter the weekend with a 6-6 record after losing to McNeese State on Tuesday night. Sophomore outside hitters Clara Vido and Marcella Braz lead the squad with 2.97 and 2.34 kills per set, respectively, as senior setter Bianca Bin directs the offense with 8.30 assists per set. Junior libero Stephany Salas tops the team with 5.18 digs per set and Vido chips in an average of 3.35 digs per set. Sophomore middle blocker Caitlin Germany heads the blocking charts with 39 total blocks. As a team, Louisiana Tech is hitting .146 with 10.98 kills per set, 1.50 service aces per set, 16.35 digs per set and 2.10 blocks per set.
The Series: Southern Miss vs. Louisiana Tech
Southern Miss leads Louisiana Tech, 6-3, in a series that began in 1987. The last meeting was a three-set Golden Eagle win (25-16, 25-13, 26-19) on Sept. 5, 2009 in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Scouting Houston Baptist
The Huskies enter the weekend with a 10-3 record following a win over Prairie View A&M Tuesday. Junior outside hitter Heather Leaverton leads the team with 3.04 kills per set and junior Victoria Weatherly directs the offense with 9.30 assists per set. Senior Courtney Whittleman tops the squad with 4.89 digs per set as Leaverton provides 2.43 digs per set and senior middle blocker Jolie Graf heads the blocking charts with 0.91 blocks per set. As a team, Houston Baptist is hitting .199 with 12.21 kills per set, 1.62 service aces per set, 15.23 digs per set and 1.99 blocks per set.

This will be the first meeting between Southern Miss and Houston Baptist.
Scouting Southeastern Louisiana
The Lady Lions enter the week with a 4-9 record after a win over Louisiana-Monroe Tuesday. Sophomore Kinsey Williams, junior Courtney Donald and senior Paige Dollison lead the team with 2.38, 2.21 and 2.02 kills per set, respectively. Sophomore setter Lindsey Young guides the offense with 6.67 assists per set as sophomore libero Megan McMillin tops the defense with 3.62 digs per set and Williams adds in 0.62 blocks per set. As a team, Southeastern Louisiana is hitting .151 with 10.96 kills per set, 0.98 service aces per set, 14.57 digs per set and 1.44 blocks per set.
The Series: Southern Miss vs. Southeastern Louisiana Southern Miss leads 28-22 in a series that began in 1980. The last meeting was a three-set sweep for the Golden Eagles (30-23, 30-23, 30-21) on Sept. 18, 2007 in Hammond, La.
