HATTIESBURG, Miss. - After a pair of split travel weekends to begin the season, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles women's soccer team gets their first opportunity to stay home for the weekend when they host Southeastern Louisiana and Mississippi State.
The Golden Eagles (1-2-1) will take on the Lady Lions on Friday with a 4 p.m. kickoff and the Bulldogs on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches will be held at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
Southern Miss holds a 5-0-1 all-time record over Southeastern Louisiana (2-0-1) with their last victory coming in 2009, a 2-0 victory at home. The teams also met in 2010 and worked to a 1-1 draw.
The Bulldogs (0-3) hold a 3-1 advantage over the Golden Eagles including a 3-0 victory in Starkville in 2010.
Coach Scott Ebke's squad is coming off a split decision weekend which saw the team defeat Jacksonville State 2-0 in Hattiesburg before falling at Louisiana-Lafayette in overtime, 3-2.
Junior Jordan Wagner continues to lead the attack with 15 shots (nine on goal) and a goal to her credit. Freshmen Macie Wallace and Brooke Hendrix have also made their presence felt, each recording a goal, while sophomore Chelsea Cruthirds has continued to build on her stellar freshman campaign.
Against the Lady Lions, the Golden Eagles will be tasked with keeping Jaci Teresinski and Megan Miller in check as both strikers have netted three goals apiece already this season. The Lady Lions have outscored their opponents 11-1 through three games and will pressure the Southern Miss back line.
Mississippi State will bring in a seasoned bunch that has not had much success early on against a tough slate of opponents. The Bulldogs hit the West Coast last week to take on UC-Riverside and No. 13 UC-Irvine, dropping both decisions.
Numerous promotions are also planned for the weekend games.
For the Friday match, the first 50 fans into the gates will receive a free Golden Eagle Pride t-shirt. On Sunday, the concession stand will be knocking down the prices of drinks and hotdogs to just $1 and the team will host a soccer skills clinic following the match for children in kindergarten through 8th grade.
Admission to all Southern Miss soccer matches is free.
