HATTIESBURG, Miss. - After a day of team activities, the Southern Miss women's soccer team squared off in their first full field scrimmage of the 2011 preseason on Thursday at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
Head coach Scott Ebke worked his team through a full time, 11-on-11 scrimmage as the day winded down and came away impressed with his team's progress since last season.
"I am extremely pleased with where we are as a team right now," said Ebke. "There was a lot of good movement out here today and it shows me that our team has been putting in the work off the field as well to be successful this season."
The Golden Eagles showed poise and control in the middle and were able to challenge each other in the evening scrimmage.
"Scrimmages like this give the coaching staff an opportunity to see how the girls grasp what we are trying to do as a team," added Ebke. "Since last season, our speed and technical skills have improved tremendously, and I'm excited to get the season underway. The team has been working incredibly hard and I think that will translate into a lot of good soccer for us in 2011."
The White squad topped the Black squad 1-0 in the match, highlighted by a laced shot from 20 yards out by redshirt freshman Missy Wentz that found the upper left corner of the goal over diving senior keeper Hannah Vanderboegh midway through the first half.
Black had their opportunities including a beautifully played ball from freshman Macie Wallace that just barely knocked iron and bounced away without harm.
The Golden Eagles kick off their 2011 campaign with a road trip to Ole Miss on Friday, Aug. 19. Their home opener is set for Sunday, Aug. 21 at 1 p.m. against Louisiana Tech and will be the first Golden Eagle athletic event of the 2011-12 year.
Admission to all Southern Miss women's soccer games is free. The Golden Eagles play their home matches at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex located off West Fourth Street near campus.
