HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Even with the heat index in Hattiesburg rising to near triple digits, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles worked through their second day of full pads in Fall camp at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility on Wednesday.
For head coach Larry Fedora, it was a surprise of sorts after a hard hitting first day of full pads on Tuesday.
"(Today's practice) was really good," said the fourth-year coach. "I was expecting them to come back sore from yesterday because it was the first day in full pads - we got after it pretty good -, but they came out there with the right attitude. The way they finished, with (the goal line practice) at the end, there was a lot of enthusiasm. They are having fun out there."
Fedora continues to be impressed with his defense as it undergoes a transformation under first-year defensive coordinator Dan Disch and his 4-2-5 scheme.
"I'd give it to (the defense) again today. They're moving around, they're flying around, they're talking, and they're having fun," noted Fedora. "The defense stopped the offense on the goal line and that's how we finished practice. The defense stopped them. You either win them or lose them right there."
The preseason camp runs until Aug. 23 and the Golden Eagles will practice once each day with the exception of two-a-day workouts on Aug. 11, 16 and 23 with a scheduled off-day on Aug. 15.
The Golden Eagles, which have recorded a school-record tying 17 consecutive winning seasons and earned nine straight postseason bowl berths, begin the process of getting ready for its season opener with a Sept. 3, contest versus Louisiana Tech at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium.
Season tickets, as well as individual game seats, are available for purchase by going online at SouthernMiss.com, or by calling 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or visiting the Pat Ferlise Center Monday through Friday from 8 a.m., until 5 p.m.
